Sometimes, finding your purpose isn’t about discovering something entirely new—it’s about recognizing how all the experiences you’ve already had can come together to create something meaningful.
For Melissa Cantara, her path to holistic health and wellness has been shaped by an eclectic collection of experiences: military service, art and education, massage therapy, bodywork, personal challenges, and a deep curiosity about how people heal.
As a Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) student studying Holistic Health and Wellness Coaching, Melissa found an opportunity to build upon the work she was already doing and expand her approach to whole-person wellness. Today, she owns KNEADS WELLNESS in southern Maine, where she brings together Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, and Holistic Health & Wellness Coaching.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that our seemingly separate experiences can become pieces of a much larger picture.
A Journey Rooted in Curiosity
Before attending the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA), Melissa had already traveled through several different careers and chapters of personal growth.
She served in the Air Force, worked as an artist and educator, became a licensed massage therapist, and later became a Registered Craniosacral Therapist (RCST®). Along the way, her own experiences with chronic illness and trauma led her to become increasingly curious about the ways the body adapts and responds to life.
These experiences shaped the way she thought about health.
Rather than focusing exclusively on individual symptoms, Melissa became drawn toward approaches that honor the whole person.
When she discovered SWIHA, she wasn't necessarily searching for an entirely new career. Instead, she was looking for a way to deepen the work she was already doing.
“Health and Wellness Coaching felt like a natural extension of my clinical practice because it expanded the conversation beyond the treatment room.”
For Melissa, coaching created another avenue for helping people develop greater awareness of their patterns, identify what matters most to them, and make meaningful changes that can become part of everyday life.
Discovering the Power of the Client’s Own Wisdom
One of the aspects of holistic health coaching that continues to inspire Melissa is the belief that clients possess their own wisdom.
Rather than positioning herself as someone who has all the answers, Melissa sees her role as creating space for people to recognize their own strengths and reconnect with what is already within them. This philosophy became particularly meaningful as she worked with clients who had lived with pain, stress, or difficult circumstances for so long that their adaptations had begun to feel like a normal part of everyday life.
Helping people recognize those patterns—without judgment—became an important part of her work. Her SWIHA education helped reinforce that perspective and encouraged her to approach wellness with curiosity, presence, and compassion.
A Defining Moment at SWIHA
While Melissa experienced many moments that confirmed she was on the right path, one of the most meaningful happened during a mindful meditation class at SWIHA.
As she settled into the practice, she began to see the landscape of her own life differently. Her experiences, losses, and unexpected turns were still there, yet she also recognized something steady that had been present throughout it all.
She describes that realization through the image of a lighthouse.
“I was the lighthouse within it, learning to trust that same steady presence in myself and helping others rediscover it within themselves.”
That perspective continues to influence the way Melissa approaches both her personal life and her work with clients.
How SWIHA Changed Her Perspective on Health
Melissa says SWIHA changed the way she understands both health and the human experience.
Her attention gradually shifted from simply asking, What is wrong? to becoming more curious about how people have adapted, what their bodies may be communicating, and what conditions might allow change to unfold naturally.
That shift extends beyond her professional practice.
It has influenced how she listens to clients, students, friends, and family—and how she relates to her own health and life experiences. For Melissa, wellness isn't simply about finding an answer to a problem. It's about becoming more curious about the person experiencing it.
Building KNEADS WELLNESS
Today, Melissa owns KNEADS WELLNESS in southern Maine, where she integrates several modalities into a whole-person approach.
Her practice offers:
- - Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
- - Manual Lymphatic Drainage
- - Holistic Health & Wellness Coaching
KNEADS WELLNESS grew from Melissa's desire to create the kind of environment she had spent years searching for herself: a place where people can slow down, feel genuinely heard, and reconnect with the wisdom of their own bodies.
Her goal is to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and greater confidence in their own capacity for health and healing.
Her SWIHA education has helped bring the different elements of her professional experience together in a unique way. She credits her education with teaching her to listen with curiosity, value presence alongside technique, and recognize that meaningful change can begin in subtle ways.
A Practitioner Who Never Stops Learning
Melissa's journey didn't end when she began practicing professionally. In fact, one of her greatest takeaways from SWIHA is that learning is never finished.
She continues to write, teach, develop educational programs, and mentor others within her field. Her personal practices—including meditation, spending time in nature, gardening, and writing—also continue to shape her understanding of health and healing.
Some of her favorite SWIHA classes included:
- - Mindful Meditation
- - Nutrition
- - Holistic Health & Wellness Coaching
- - Entrepreneurial courses
Each helped her explore wellness from a different perspective, from cultivating self-awareness and nourishing the body to creating sustainable change and building a practice grounded in integrity.
The Lesson of Presence
When asked about the greatest lesson she learned at SWIHA, Melissa's answer is simple:
Healing begins with presence.
Knowledge, techniques, and clinical skills all have value, yet Melissa believes none of them replace the importance of being fully present with another person. That philosophy is now woven into her work.
It also reflects a central theme of her journey: sometimes the most meaningful support we can offer isn't about having the perfect answer. It's about creating the space for another person to listen to themselves.
Her Advice for Future SWIHA Students
Melissa's advice to future students is to stay curious.
There will always be another technique to learn, another book to read, or another perspective to explore. She encourages students to develop the habit of observing before immediately reaching for answers.
And perhaps most importantly, she reminds students that graduation isn't the end of their education.
The people they work with will continue to teach them. Their own lives will continue to shape their understanding of health. Growth continues through every client, class, conversation, and experience.
“Trust the process, remain open, and permit yourself to keep growing.”
When Every Experience Becomes Part of the Journey
Looking back, Melissa recognizes that the different chapters of her life were never truly separate. Her military experience, years as an artist and educator, personal experiences with chronic illness and trauma, and work as a bodyworker all continue to inform the practitioner she is today. Together, those experiences have shaped how she listens, the questions she asks, and the way she understands healing.
Her journey demonstrates one of the beautiful possibilities of holistic education: you don't have to leave your previous experiences behind to create something new.
Sometimes, the next chapter is about bringing everything you've learned together.
Today, Melissa continues that work through KNEADS WELLNESS, supporting people as they reconnect with their bodies, deepen their self-awareness, and recognize their own capacity for health and healing.
Her SWIHA journey is still unfolding—and, true to her philosophy, she remains curious about where it will lead next.
