Long before modern medicine cabinets and pharmacies existed, people turned to the healing wisdom of plants. Across cultures and generations, herbs have been used to support wellness, restore balance, and deepen our connection to the natural world. Today, that ancient wisdom is experiencing a powerful resurgence as more people seek holistic, sustainable approaches to health and healing.

If you’ve ever felt drawn toward plant medicine, herbal remedies, natural wellness, or living more in tune with the earth, SWIHA’s Western Herbalism program offers an opportunity to turn that passion into meaningful education and a purposeful career path.

At the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, students in the Western Herbalism program don’t just study plants — they develop a relationship with them. Through hands-on learning, field study, medicine-making, and holistic education, students gain the skills and knowledge to work with herbs in both practical and transformational ways.

What Is Western Herbalism?

Western Herbalism is the study and use of medicinal plants to support health and well-being. Rooted in traditional European herbal practices and expanded through modern holistic education, Western Herbalism blends intuitive plant wisdom with scientific understanding.

At SWIHA, students explore herbalism through multiple lenses — from phytochemical science and anatomy to energetic healing, earth stewardship, and sustainable plant practices.

The program is designed to help students understand what herbs do, and how to responsibly cultivate, prepare, formulate, and work with them in real-world settings.

A Hands-On Herbalism Education

One of the most unique aspects of SWIHA’s Western Herbalism program is its immersive, experiential learning approach.

Students don’t simply read about herbs in textbooks — they actively engage with plants through:

  • - Herbal medicine preparation
  • - Herb cultivation and gardening
  • - Botanical identification
  • - Fieldwork in Southwest ecosystems
  • - Sustainable wildcrafting practices
  • - Herbal pharmacy and formulation
  • - Research writing and public speaking
  • - Externship opportunities and community education
  •

SWIHA’s curriculum allows students to experience “every aspect of plant medicine from seed to sale,” helping prepare graduates for a wide variety of opportunities within the herbal wellness field.

The program also explores topics such as:

  • - Traditional Chinese herbals
  • - Ayurveda
  • - Native American plant traditions
  • - Plant chemistry
  • - Herbal remedies for different body systems
  • - Herbs for women and children
  • - Herbal manufacturing and retail practices
  •

This balanced approach gives students both the scientific foundation and intuitive understanding needed to work confidently with herbal medicine.

Learn from Experienced Herbalists

SWIHA’s Western Herbalism program is led by experienced practitioners who are passionate about preserving and sharing herbal wisdom.

Program Director Shannon Stapleton brings years of hands-on experience in wildcrafting, formulation, and apothecary work to the classroom. As a graduate of the program herself, she understands both the transformational nature of herbal education and the importance of mentoring future herbalists with integrity and care.

Students are encouraged to deepen their relationship with nature while learning how to ethically and sustainably work with plants as healers, teachers, and allies.

What Can You Do with a Western Herbalism Education?

One of the most exciting aspects of herbalism is how many directions it can take you.

SWIHA graduates have gone on to become:

  • - Herbal remedy producers
  • - Herbal educators
  • - Plant walk and wildcrafting guides
  • - Herbal consultants
  • - Wellness coaches
  • - Apothecary owners
  • - Herbal product creators
  • - Writers and researchers
  • - Teachers of herbal agriculture
  • - Herbal food and wellness entrepreneurs
  •

Many graduates also integrate herbalism into existing careers in coaching, massage therapy, yoga, energy work, nutrition, and holistic wellness practices.

Whether your dream is to create herbal products, educate your community, support clients naturally, or simply deepen your personal connection to plant medicine, this program provides a strong foundation to begin that journey.

A Program Rooted in Purpose and Sustainability

SWIHA’s Western Herbalism program goes beyond career training — it also emphasizes conscious living, sustainability, and earth stewardship.

Students learn the importance of respecting plant ecosystems, harvesting responsibly, and cultivating a relationship with the natural world built on reciprocity and care. This connection to the earth becomes a powerful part of the educational experience.

In a world where many people feel increasingly disconnected from nature, herbalism offers an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and rediscover the wisdom that plants have offered humanity for generations.
