Some journeys begin with a clear destination. Others begin with a quiet feeling that there must be something more.
For recent Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) graduate Kori McKinley, that feeling showed up after years spent caring for others. Working in medical settings and caregiving roles, she dedicated much of her life to helping people navigate their challenges. Yet beneath the surface, she found herself asking deeper questions about stress, emotions, healing, and why so many people—including herself—seemed to be carrying burdens they didn't fully understand.
What started as a search for personal growth became a transformative journey of self-discovery through SWIHA's Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner Online Program with a specialization in Hypnotherapy. Along the way, Kori gained far more than professional training. She found a new understanding of herself, a deeper sense of compassion, and a calling to help others feel safe, seen, and supported on their own healing journeys.
Seeking Something More
"I was living more in survival mode and constantly pushing through stress and overwhelm without fully understanding what was happening in my nervous system," Kori shares.
Drawn to healing, psychology, self-awareness, and understanding the deeper connections between mind and body, Kori began searching for a program that aligned with her values. She found that in SWIHA's Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner program.
"I chose the Integrative Healing Arts and Hypnotherapy program because it connected the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual sides of healing in a way that felt more real and human to me."
A Defining Moment of Self-Compassion
Like many students who begin a healing arts journey, Kori discovered that some of the most profound lessons were not only academic—they were deeply personal.
One of her most impactful realizations came when she began learning about nervous system regulation, stress responses, grounding practices, and emotional patterns.
"One of the biggest defining moments for me was realizing that many of the things I thought were 'wrong' with me were actually nervous system responses from stress, overwhelm, and life experiences."
That understanding shifted the way she viewed herself.
"Learning about regulation, self-awareness, grounding, and emotional patterns helped me feel less broken and more compassionate toward myself."
As her awareness grew, so did her sense of purpose.
"I started noticing how much I naturally wanted to help others feel seen and understood. That was when I realized I was on the right path."
Growth Beyond the Classroom
Since beginning her studies at SWIHA, Kori says her life has changed significantly.
She has developed a deeper understanding of her own stress responses, emotional needs, and behavioral patterns. More importantly, she has learned to approach herself with greater compassion and care.
"I have learned the importance of slowing down, boundaries, grounding, and listening to my body instead of constantly pushing through everything."
Through her education, Kori discovered that true healing isn't about perfection—it's about awareness, balance, and connection.
"I feel more connected to who I really am and what I want my future to look like."
Building a Vision for the Future
Today, Kori continues her educational journey while balancing caregiving responsibilities, family life, and personal growth.
Professionally, she is passionate about hypnotherapy, holistic healing, and nervous system regulation. Her long-term vision is to create a healing space where individuals feel emotionally safe, supported, and understood.
"I have always wanted to create a calm and supportive space where people feel emotionally safe without judgment or pressure."
Her future practice will focus on helping clients better understand stress, overwhelm, emotional patterns, self-compassion, and nervous system regulation through a grounded and holistic lens.
"The skills I learned at SWIHA have helped me become a better listener, more self-aware, and more understanding of how emotional and physical wellness are deeply connected."
Lessons That Last a Lifetime
When asked about the greatest lesson she learned during her time at SWIHA, Kori's answer reflects a truth many healing arts practitioners come to embrace.
"One of the greatest lessons I learned at SWIHA is that healing is not always linear or perfect."
She learned that slowing down is not a weakness. That boundaries are necessary. That self-compassion matters. And that awareness is often the first step toward meaningful change.
"SWIHA helped me realize that growth often starts with awareness first."
Teachers Who Made an Impact
Kori credits her instructors with helping create a supportive learning environment that encouraged both growth and self-discovery.
"Some of the most impactful teachers for me were the ones who made the material feel relatable, safe, and human instead of overly clinical or rigid."
She specifically recognizes Sherry G. and Sherry F. for their influence while noting that every instructor contributed to her experience.
Her favorite classes explored hypnotherapy, nervous system regulation, stress responses, self-awareness, mindfulness, grounding practices, and holistic healing concepts.
"Many of the classes helped me better understand both myself and other people."
Advice for Future SWIHA Students
For those considering a healing arts education, Kori offers simple yet powerful advice:
"Trust the process and don't compare yourself to everyone else."
She encourages future students to remember that much of the learning happens through personal growth and self-reflection—not just through coursework.
"It's okay if your journey feels messy at times because healing and growth are not always neat and organized."
Most importantly, she encourages students to stay authentic.
"Let your own voice come through in your work."
Creating More Compassionate Conversations
At the heart of Kori's journey is a desire to help others experience greater understanding and self-compassion.
"One thing I would want people to know is that I believe healing should feel human, supportive, and approachable."
Her experiences have shown her that many people carry stress, overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, and nervous system dysregulation without fully recognizing it.
"I am passionate about helping people understand themselves with more compassion instead of shame."
As she continues building the foundation for her future practice, Kori hopes to create spaces and conversations that help people feel less alone and more connected to themselves.
Her story is a beautiful reminder that healing often begins with awareness—and that when we learn to understand ourselves with compassion, we create the possibility for profound transformation.
At SWIHA, we're honored to have been part of Kori's journey and look forward to seeing the impact she will continue to make in the lives of others.
