For many students, enrolling at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) is about gaining knowledge and preparing for a new career. Yet for recent Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner (IHAP) graduate Tara Kelley, it became something even more meaningful—a journey back to herself.
Driven by a lifelong desire to help others heal, Tara came to SWIHA seeking professional training and a deeper understanding of holistic wellness. What she found was far more transformative than she expected.
Before beginning the Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner program, Tara describes life as stressful.
She knew she wanted more than just a new credential—she wanted the tools to create meaningful change, both for herself and for those she serves.
"I wanted to have a certificate and learn more about how I can help people. I love helping people heal and guide them."
That passion made the IHAP program a natural fit. Through its blend of mind-body-spirit education and practical healing modalities, Tara discovered new professional skills as well as a renewed sense of purpose.
Every healing journey has a turning point.
For Tara, it came midway through the program.
"When I finally chose myself in the middle of the program."
That decision became the defining moment of her SWIHA experience.
As she continued through the program, she realized she had found exactly the path she was meant to walk.
"I knew I was on the right track because I was able to get my footing back."
Choosing herself didn't mean turning away from helping others—it meant becoming the strongest, healthiest version of herself so she could serve others more fully.
One of the greatest gifts Tara received during her time at SWIHA was learning how to care for herself with the same compassion she offers others.
"It definitely has improved, and I know how to help myself more than I ever have before in my world."
That personal growth continues to influence every area of her life today.
Rather than simply learning healing techniques, Tara experienced healing firsthand—a powerful reminder that holistic education often transforms the practitioner just as much as the future clients they will support.
Tara's entrepreneurial spirit began long before attending SWIHA.
In 2008, she launched Mystic Shimmers, a handcrafted candle business that allowed her creativity to shine.
Today, that vision has expanded into Mystic Transformations, her healing practice dedicated to supporting clients on their own wellness journeys.
Together, the two businesses beautifully complement one another:
Tara continues investing in both businesses every day, believing that even small steps consistently move her closer to her goals.
A meaningful education is often shaped by the mentors who walk alongside you.
When reflecting on her experience, Tara expressed deep appreciation for several SWIHA instructors who made a lasting impact.
She credits Jodi Johnson, Rachel Astarte, and Lori Dye for their encouragement, compassion, and unwavering support throughout her educational journey.
"They are supportive and so helpful!"
Having instructors who truly care creates an environment where students feel safe to grow—academically and personally as well.
When asked about the most valuable lesson she learned at SWIHA, Tara's answer was simple yet profound.
"To choose myself."
In holistic wellness, self-care isn't selfish—it's foundational.
Practitioners who nurture their own well-being are better equipped to hold space for others with authenticity, compassion, and resilience.
For Tara, that lesson continues to guide both her personal life and her professional mission.
If Tara could offer one piece of advice to anyone considering SWIHA, it would be this:
"Take the chance—it's worth it!!"
It's a message many graduates share.
Stepping into a healing profession often begins with stepping outside your comfort zone. The courage to invest in yourself can open doors you never imagined possible.
Today, Tara continues building her businesses while looking toward the future. She's excited to continue growing as an entrepreneur.
Her mission remains beautifully simple:
"I am doing my best to be a bright shining light on this planet!"
At SWIHA, we couldn't be more proud to celebrate graduates like Tara—individuals who embrace their own healing journey so they can empower others to do the same.
Whether you're feeling called to support others through coaching, energy work, holistic wellness, or personal transformation, the Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner (IHAP) program offers an opportunity to develop practical skills while discovering your own potential along the way.
