Stressed Out? Give Yoga Nidra a Try!

Written by Lea Howell | 12/8/25 3:00 PM

As a recent graduate of SWIHA’s Integrative Healing Arts Practitioner (IHAP) program, I never expected Yoga Nidra to have such a profound impact on my life—yet it did from the very first week. Over the fifteen-week Yoga Nidra certification course, I witnessed incredible shifts in myself and in my volunteer clients as well. The experiences shared by my classmates were full of healing, insight, and transformation. What began as curiosity quickly became a deeply meaningful journey inward—one that brought me clarity, calm, and a new connection to my Higher Self. I’m excited to share a summary of what I’ve learned about Yoga Nidra and its powerful ability to reduce stress.

The Adventure Within

What if the greatest adventure of your life is the one that leads inward? The one that reconnects you with the truest version of yourself—the part of you that has been present through every experience. Meditation offers this pathway, and Yoga Nidra, a guided form of meditative rest, helps cultivate a deeper relationship with your Higher Self and sense of Oneness.

During Yoga Nidra, the body is invited to fully rest and return to a state of wholeness. This promotes stress reduction and, over time, supports physical and emotional healing. In fact, reduced stress is often the very first benefit people notice. By calming the nervous system, Yoga Nidra helps rewrite the body’s learned responses to stress, allowing us to meet future challenges with greater ease.

What Is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra offers a path to deep relaxation by guiding your awareness through various layers of consciousness. As you turn inward, you naturally disengage from daily stressors and enter a state where healing can unfold. With consistent practice, many people experience more emotional resilience, clearer thinking, and an inner peace that carries into everyday life.

One of my favorite definitions comes from Kamini Desai in Yoga Nidra – I AM Immersion Manual:
“A series of structured awareness techniques that optimize physical restoration and interrupt the process by which we engage in stressful thoughts.”

How the Body Reacts to Stress

In ancient times, stress served a lifesaving purpose. If a tiger approached, your body triggered a fight-or-flight response. Today, even though most “threats” are perceived rather than real, the body reacts the same way. It’s believed that up to 80% of doctor visits are stress-related.

When the brain interprets something as a threat—whether it’s a deadline or a disagreement—it releases chemicals that can take a toll on the body. Over time, chronic stress can even shrink gray matter in the brain. Fortunately, Yoga Nidra helps reverse some of these effects. Studies suggest that within just eleven hours of practice, the brain begins to remap and reorganize itself toward greater calm and clarity. That is something truly tangible.

How Our Thoughts Shape Our Experience

Our mind and nervous system respond to what is happening around us, and also to what we imagine. Every internal conversation sends chemical signals to the body. When we change our relationship with our thoughts, the magic of Yoga Nidra unfolds.

Yoga Nidra guides us into what is known as the “Observer” consciousness—a place where we witness our experiences rather than react to them. Imagine clouds moving across the sky: in this practice, you become the sky, vast and open, while your thoughts and stresses drift by without pulling you in. This shift can dramatically change how we navigate life.

My Personal Shift

These shifts in consciousness have brought me to a place where stress simply doesn’t feel as stressful. I still face the same life challenges, yet the emotional charge behind them has softened. When I was deciding between Mindfulness Meditation and Yoga Nidra at SWIHA, I chose Yoga Nidra without really knowing what I was stepping into. Looking back, it was exactly what I needed.

If you’re unsure about taking these classes, my advice is simple: Go for it. You’ll learn so much about yourself and discover how to walk through life with more peace and presence.
