Have you ever paused long enough to think about the incredible, unseen world living inside your gut? I'm talking about your gut microbiome—a moving universe of trillions of tiny bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These microscopic microbes aren't just residing there; they're actively working to keep your gut and its lining healthy. And believe me, when your gut is happy, it sends waves of well-being throughout your entire body.
You see, any imbalance or damage in this gut world often shows up as inflammation elsewhere. I know because I struggle with it—and have for years. Think about conditions like leaky gut, celiac disease, or IBS… these are often subtle signs from our gut, asking for a little extra attention. In fact, so many chronic health challenges—from diabetes, arthritis, and certain cancers, to persistent inflammation and even the strength of your immune system—all trace back to the health of your gut. It truly is a central universe for our whole health.
After having Barrett’s esophagus, developing esophageal cancer, and receiving a man-made esophagus implant, I knew I needed to change how I ate—not only because of the implant, also to support and protect my gut health. I didn’t want to get cancer again. My grandmother also died of stomach cancer, and that affected me deeply. I want to help others avoid the same fate by learning to keep their gut healthy, without getting an “expiration date” like I did.
This journey led me to pursue a career in health and wellness and do more research on the microbiome and the effects it has on all of us. I’ve learned so much about how to prevent disease and autoimmune issues. I started with a plant-based diet and added more omega-3s. After getting a microbiome test, I learned which foods were good for my gut—and which ones weren’t. It’s a great place to start, and that’s always a great thing!
The good news—and what I truly want to share with you—is that we hold so much power to fix this inner ecosystem. If your gut feels a little out of sorts, you can support its repair. Nourish it with wholesome foods, especially a colorful abundance of vegetables. (Bonus: it looks better on the plate, too!) You might also explore trying prebiotics and probiotics. And now I’ve learned about postbiotics, too, which can help rebalance and replenish these beneficial communities.
Embracing a plant-based way of eating often becomes the best path for managing many chronic conditions. Call it a natural prescription from nature itself. Remember, within us, these tiny microbes exist, and some are incredibly helpful—guiding us toward health—while others, if unbalanced, can cause a lot of havoc in our whole body. It’s all about nurturing that lively community within.
Changing how I eat because of microbiome testing has helped me lose weight, feel healthier, and have more energy.
And you can too!
